Jun 11, 2009 · If your charging system isn't putting out juice, the engine will sometimes pull power from the battery to spark. Once you run down to where you don't have enough power for spark, the engine dies. The easy test is to re-charge your battery, start the mower, and then check voltage accross your battery terminals. It should be something like 14 volts.

    There should be a brown connector near the engine blower shroud on the right side with 2 wires. That comes straight off your stator, hook up a muti meter and test what that is putting out. It should be over 12 because that is unregulated. I would also check how much is getting to the battery.

Battery Based on the voltages you provided, the charging system would seem to be fine at 14.5 volts, but the battery at 12.45 to 12.1 appears to be very low. A fully charged battery should be 12.7 or better. And the drop from 12.45 to 12.1 just turning on the key is a harbinger of a battery issue, not a charging issue.
